A redditor asked the following question:

Question#

I recently got certified as a scrum master and it is difficult getting a job. Please I need help!

How do I get experience with no job offers?

My answer#

I would suggest to start from another role, e.g. analyst or tester, or a team leader. To be a good Scrum Master you need to know how the work is done, what the problems are, because as a Scrum Master you will be changing the whole company to be truly agile.

I believe that the Scrum Master is a responsibility that should be taken by the most experienced people with years of experience in product development.

It worked out like that for me. I got my experience with testing and then i snatch the scrum master role that was there for the taking, then I got the certificate.

I shared my own experience#

Me too. I’ve been a developer for 17 years, also a natural change agent. I’ve also been a Scrum Master for 5 years. I think it’s almost impossible to start a career as a Scrum Master. You have to start from something else. I know there are a lot of so-called junior scrum masters out there, but that’s a big problem. A lot of companies want to be agile, so they hire a Scrum Master with a certificate who has no experience and brings no value to the organisation. Lately we are seeing a lot of problems in the Scrum Master market, companies are firing people in this position. But the real problem is that a lot of people should not be in this role in the first place. This is a leadership position, it requires experience, agile values in mind, and a certain type of character that makes you want to improve processes, coach and teach people etc.

The role of the Scrum Master is not only about Scrum. You have to know a lot more, you have to learn every day. Other things you need to know are for example Lean, Kanban, ToC, eXtreme Programming, Demming cycle, Cynefin, Team Topologies, DevOps, facilitation techniques, conflict resolution and many more.
