I was wondering whether to put this article here, as I might sound arrogant, but I didn’t want to say anything wrong. I just wanted to say that you don’t need to be in the scrum master position to be a real scrum master.

A redditor asked the following question:

Question#

I just saw a SM job posting on LI for a hybrid role in my area that was posted 4 hours ago with 299 applicants.

How bad is the job market out there for SM roles?/Also what are folks doing to stay ahead of the curve and what are some other career options?

My answer#

Dear Scrum Masters, get a real job. Like a developer, and then as a developer, you can also teach your team agile, all the good practices like TDD or Continuous Delivery, help the PO with product discovery, help the team with removing impediments, etc. IMO, Scrum Master is not a job position. It’s a responsibility in the team.

Then OP called me arrogant asshole#

If you ever have wondered in your life why devs have a reputation in some circles as socially crippled arrogant assholes… this is why.

I replied#

My point was that good Scrum Masters should not have problems finding a job because they are masters in their field of expertise.

Scrum masters are coaches, their main responsibility is to develop a team. I work in software development, which means that Scrum Masters in my field need to know the basics of software architecture, software development best practices, facilitation methods, knowledge of changing organisational structure and much more.

So if you can’t find a job as an SM, you can always become a developer, product manager, people manager or independent consultant. There are plenty of opportunities because Scrum Master should evolve from other roles. It’s not something you start your career with.
