A redditor asked the following question:

Question#

How to make Scrum fun?

Help me out, I am a new SM and I want to know how I can make daily standups more fun for the participants. Or even some exercises can be done to bring some changes in the traditional standup.

My answer#

You are not a Scrum Master, you are a Scrum Noob. But you can change that. Firstly, when you do scrum, it is not a standup. It’s a daily scrum. You can sit, seriously. :) The standup is a practice from eXtreme Programming. Secondly, the standup is not a meeting for you. The Scrum Master shouldn’t even be present at a Daily Scrum, unless the developers are inexperienced and need guidance, or have asked you to join. Your job in this case is to teach the developers what the purpose of this meeting is, which is to create a plan for the next working day so that the developers can move towards the sprint goal. It is basically a planning meeting for the next day.

Then another redditor asked me a question#

True, but there are some teams I’ve been adjacent that really need to stand because they take an hour talking about nothing, and at least standing will make them end it faster.

I replied#

I would say that in this case, the problem is that the developers don’t understand the purpose of the daily Scrum. An hour-long meeting seems like a lack of focus and a waste of time to me. Sometimes there is a need to discuss something, but I’d say the discussion should be treated as part of the development or refinement, probably not everyone needs to be involved. In this case, a standing meeting is like putting a band-aid on an open wound. There are more important things to fix.
